Chincoteague Island – A Unique Experience – Introduction.

When the holiday fourth of July falls on a Tuesday it extends the weekend; commonly called long weekend. It also affords an opportunity to travel to a destination and stay overnight over a longer period. Baqar and Pooja alongwith their close friends Raghu and Roopa with their children Eshan, Ayan and Tanish respectively chose Chincoteague island in Virginia as their holiday destination. At the last minute they were lucky to book rooms at the Marriott hotel. I was the odd man out with them!

From our residence in Delaware (which by the way is just 10 minutes drive to President Biden’s residence!!) the pleasant drive lasted three and half hours on a very sunny and cool day. The map is for those who would like to visit the island.

Unlike the Ocean City, Maryland beach, the Chincoteague island beach is not a commercial beach so the scenery is not destroyed by the structures for commercial shops and restaurants. You can hear the sounds of the waves and the seagulls chirping, flying low for food. The long beach has clear and virgin sand all along the coast where the visitors relax, play, swim and enjoy in a peacefully calm and serene environment. We found a clear spot close to the beach and setup our beach chairs.

I wanted to experience the touch of the waves hitting my feet and feel the breeze on my face, so I carried my “director’s” chair very close to the water.

Like the sea gulls do I want to soar in the sky over the ocean? Of course the will to do it is omnipresent however the ‘gravity’ does not permit it to happen!

Is it orange or yellow sun set or is it multicolored? Whatever! The zen is so peaceful, soothing, calm and alluring!

I can for hours continue watching the sun set, few may worship the rising son! I see and know that,

The world is bathed in amber glow
As shadows lengthen, soft and slow
The birds take flight, their songs subside
As darkness creeps and night does bide

So let us pause and take it in
This wonder that we see begin
For every sunset marks an end
And yet, a new day will ascend.

The charm and the secrets of the ‘inhabitants’ of the Island is shown and narrated in Part II.

Coming up soon!
